Your body needs more than just protein and veggie’s. Protein is not a fuel source, it is a building block. This means that it is not designed to give you energy for your body and brain to work, it is designed to repair and build tissues. It is essential for you to have and has many benefits, but you need more than just protein to fuel your body.

Carbohydrates and fats are the main fuel sources! Carbohydrates break down in the body to glucose, which is the fuel for your muscles and brain. The best carbohydrates are the ones that burn the cleanest (i.e. don’t cause inflammation, fatigue, sluggishness, fogginess, or joint pain) = brown rice, wild rice, quinoa, oats, millet, sweet potatoes, beets, squash, carrots, turnips, yams, and parsnips. Fats can also be used as energy in the body. If you burn through your carbohydrates, your body will shuttle your fat cells in and covert them to energy. You can also use healthy fats as energy sources. The best healthy fats = coconut oil, mct oil, grass-fed butter, ghee, avocado, olives, olive oil, salmon, anchovies, sardines, nuts, and seeds. You can become “fat-adapted” meaning your body becomes tuned to using fat as it’s primary fuel source. We do this in our advanced work mainly for enhanced cognitive performance and for endurance athletes.

Quick key point for you to know, there is a specific type of fat called medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s) that absorb directly into the bloodstream on ingestion to fuel the body and fuel the brain directly(unique among fats). These are coconut oil, grass-fed butter, ghee, and concentrated MCT oil.

Quick key point for you to know, if you compete in a sport that requires you to be explosive, you should be taking in good quality carbohydrates to fuel your muscles and recover them. If you are a businessperson that is using a lot of brain power each day, you should be taking in good quality carbohydrates to fuel your brain. The brain is the most metabolically active organ in the body, uses up over 20% of the body’s resources, and relies on glucose!
