What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. It is based on the healing power of nature and it supports and stimulates the body’s ability to heal itself. Naturopathic medicine is the art and science of disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention using natural therapies including: botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, naturopathic manipulation, traditional Chinese medicine/acupuncture, lifestyle counselling and health promotion and disease prevention.

How does Naturopathic Medicine compare to Conventional Medicine?

Both are doctors, both provide primary care and both are similarly trained. The primary differences between naturopathic and conventional medicine are the philosophical approach and the therapies used. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) treat patients as individuals by addressing the physical, environmental, lifestyle, attitudinal, and emotional aspects of health. This allows naturopathic doctors to find and treat the cause of the disease using a variety of therapies. Conventional doctors generally address and treat the symptoms of disease and use pharmaceutical therapies or surgery.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a personalized, systems-oriented model that empowers patients and practitioners to achieve the highest expression of health by working in collaboration to address the underlying causes of disease. It involves specialized lab testing like Food Sensitivity Blood Testing, Urinary or Saliva Comprehensive Hormone Testing, Complete Thyroid Panels, Urinary Organic Acid Detoxification Testing, Stool Testing for Digestive concerns.

What is the typical process like at Phenom HPM?

1. ASSESS

Find the underlying causes of issues and other factors keeping you from feeling and functioning at your best. We often use very specific lab tests(blood, saliva, urine, stool) to see what’s going on in the body - to find out what level you are currently functioning at, identify any deficiencies, and highlight areas for improvement.

2. CORRECT

Correct any underlying issues with the strategic use of evidence-based nutrition and natural supplements. This is the start of optimizing your health and performance.

3. OPTIMIZE

We start to focus on maximizing your health and performance. With emphasis on supporting long-term health and the prevention of injury, illness and disease. Preventative medicine is the best medicine.

How many visits should I expect to have?

While everyone is certainly different, we typically see patients for 3-4 months(approx. 5 visits) and then show them how to maintain optimal function by following their custom Maintenance Plan. We recommend they return in 6-12 months to re-check their problem areas as a lot can change in the human body in 3-6 months and we believe in Preventative Medicine.

You would just need to do our IV Assessment prior to doing IV Therapy.

Do you ever load people on supplements?

No! We believe in precision medicine. If we need to use certain nutrients, botanicals, vitamins or minerals it would be for a specific reason, based on lab results, or to get certain improvements. There are some base nutrients that most people would benefit from, but outside of those we typically have people come off of supplements we recommend once we’ve gotten the improvements we are looking for or seen the improvements on any follow-up lab testing.

Do patients have to come to the clinic?

We do like to see our patients, but also are very used to accommodating to people’s busy schedules and realize it may not be easy to come in. We do a lot of Telemedicine Visits(Phone/Video). This is available for our Ontario, Canada based patients. We are well equipped to ship any lab kits or supplements direct to our patients.
